Once upon a time…

Once upon a time a few Raveners wanted something different. They wanted to start something new and different from existing communities surrounding the Ravencoin code base, as by nature Ravencoin is code and in code we trust. We wanted to create an environment in which everything is based upon the following saying: “By the community, for the community.” Which will mean that everyone is equal, and everybody will be free to propose and execute ideas as time goes. Voting will always be done community wide, with a voting system that will ensure it to be fair. Essentially, this “voting system” should create a true consensus mechanism for making decisions. And it would erase the possibility for single entities or a select group of people to make the decisions.

I’d like to quote Bruce Fenton on his twitter and use it to explain why we, the community, think this way of having a community should be present for the Ravencoin code base.

 

Ravencoin could be the fairest coin since Bitcoin. Community driven, no sale, ICO or premine, just code published and given away in the spirit of the cypherpunk manifesto, anyone can run it.”

To give usability and value to a system that’s build up based up of one of the biggest open-source projects out there (Bitcoin) you’d need a community having the same mindset as the creators of the code itself. That’s where this Raven Discord comes in. We, the community, will form as time goes. As stated before, everything will be in the hands of the community. By the community, for the community.

This Community driven Discord server will follow the rules as written down by BW in section #rules and are shown below:

On the entire server, Admins and Mods do not have the power to ban or kick, that ability is disabled. Instead, we believe in freedom and temporary time-outs where you will still be able to see all channels and posts, but will be temporarily limited to posting only in the time-out channel.

 

This server is run by the community. Everything is done in an open and transparent way. All users are equal. Everything is open for debate, and what the community decides, is how the server will be run. The owner, all admins, all mods and all settings are chosen by the community.

If you have any issues with users (including admins or mods) please reach out to the community or a @Moderator or an @Admin.

The origin of this mindset for having freedom of speech, true community decisions and basically no rules is originating from paragraph 2 in “A Cypherpunk’s Manifesto” by Eric Hughes, 1993. Which is quoted below.

If two parties have some sort of dealings, then each has a memory of their interaction. Each party can speak about their own memory of this; how could anyone prevent it? One could pass laws against it, but the freedom of speech, even more than privacy, is fundamental to an open society; we seek not to restrict any speech at all. If many parties speak together in the same forum, each can speak to all the others and aggregate together knowledge about individuals and other parties. The power of electronic communications has enabled such group speech, and it will not go away merely because we might want it to.
